Cricket Competition at LUMHS Jamshoro

By - Dr. Abdul Wahid Baloch - MSc Trainee (Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery) Extracurricular and recreational activities have always been considered as an essential part of the academic system at Liaquat University of Medicine and Health Sciences (LUMHS). Such activities enrich the students health and nurtures pleasant interactive skills among them. In this regard, a Teacher versus students (3RD Year BDS) friendly Cricket competition was held at the LUMHS Dentistry ground recently. It proved to be an interesting and competitive event, where all the participants and spectators thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The exciting moments were filled with the spirit of competition. In the first round, the fate of the Match turned in the favor of the Faculty's team. This was partially because the Teachers demonstrated a greater cricketing experience and partially due to the student team's sluggish performance as they clearly under-estimated the sporting skills of their teachers. Frustrated by their failure to beat the teachers in the first match, the students overcame their sloppy performance and looked more determined to win. This enthusiasm enabled the students to avenge their loss, as they played more energetically and won the second match. Thus the competition ended in a draw, but provided a memorable event and high-spirits for the students and faculty of LUMHS. Such activities are considered fresh and healthy because this not only ensures physical fitness but also renders freshness for the minds, and optimizes the learning capacity. Moreover, such friendly matches also create mutual understanding and nurture friendly ties among the various teams and participants. Thus creating a better learning environment in any educational institution. Every institution should arrange such matches at regular intervals to provide fun, excitement and healthy learning opportunities, while boosting the quality of education.
