Peshawar: A three day conference titled ”Dentofacial Deformity- Surgical Orthodontic Interface” organized by Rehman College of Dentistry (RCD), Peshawar, in collaboration with Khyber College of Dentistry (KCD) and Pakistan Association of Orthodontists (PAO) .
The conference was sequenced as pre and post conference Surgery and Orthodontic lecture sessions alongside workshops. Well renowned Oral and Maxillofacial surgeons , Orthodontists and other Dental professionals from across Pakistan attended the event.
Keynote speakers of the event included Prof. Dr. Ambreen Afzal (Altamash Institute of Dental Medicine, Karachi), Prof. Dr. Anwar A. Shah (Shifa International Hospital, Islamabad), Dr. Zubair Durrani (Rehman College of Dentistry, Peshawar ) , Brig. Dr. Gulzar Bukhari (Armed Forces Institute of Dentistry, Rawalpindi) and Dr.Ahsan Mahmood Shah (Khyber College of Dentistry, Peshawar).
The speakers addressed the key issues faced by patients with ‘Dentofacial deformities’, including Cleft Lip & Palate. The need for liaison of specialities, team approach towards management, followed by Orthodontic-Surgical perspectives and latest treatment modalities of various cases were discussed.
Orthodontic Workshops included three pre and post conference workshops.
The first Pre Conference Workshop, titled: “Get Wise with Edgewise: Know your gear”, facilitated by Dr. Ayesha Iftikhar ( Assistant Professor, Department of Orthodontics, RCD) and Dr. Akbar Ali Khan (Head of Department, Orthodontics, Kohat Medical Institute). 40 Post Graduate Trainees attended the session and learnt the evolution of Bracket prescriptions, tips and tricks of Bracket identification and their Clinical applications in various clinical scenarios.
The second Post Conference Orthodontic Workshop, titled: “Intrusion Arches: Bio Mechanics and Fabrication”, facilitated by Prof. Dr. Imran Tajik (HOD, Sardar Begum Dental College, Peshawar) and Dr. Nasir Mushtaq (Associate Professor, RCD) . About 50 Post Graduate Trainees attended the conference and learnt the fabrication of three-piece Intrusion Arches.
The third Post Conference Orthodontic Workshop, titled: “Surgical Orthodontics: From Planning to Execution”, facilitated by Dr. Owais Durrani (HOD, Islamic International Dental Hospital Islamabad) and Dr.Sohrab Shaheed (HOD, RCD). The trainees learnt the essentials of planning surgical cases, keys to successful treatment including Prediction Tracing and Face bow Recording. Owl technique of model surgery was an important component of the workshop. Almost 90 trainees attended this session.
Two Surgical Workshops were conducted by Dr. Asif Ullah Qureshi (Assistant Professor, Oral Pathology, RCD).
First Workshop on “Implant Placement”, focusing on information regarding Planning and Placement of Implants. Various Implant designs, Patient selection, Site analysis and level of difficulties were discussed. The participants were also taught the procedure to plan implants on CBCT. All the participants had the opportunity to place implants during the Hands-on Session.
Second Surgical Workshop on “Bone Grafting”. This session aimed at explaining various options available for Guided Bone Regeneration during Implant placement. The participants were taught various Bone Harvesting Techniques and their indications. The participants also practiced bone harvesting procedures.
Prof. Dr. Nasr Ullah Mengal, President, Pakistan Association of Orthodontists was invited as the Chief Guest. He appreciated the efforts of the organizers and participants and distributed shields and certificates amongst the speakers and participants of the event.
