KARACHI – The ideology behind the institution of Hamdard University Dental Hospital (HUDH) is to adequately serve dental communities by playing their part in the dispensation of dental knowledge, particularly amongst the youth, and by creating dental awareness amongst all populations.
Children are the most susceptible population when it comes to dental caries. With this fact in mind, Hamdard Public School (HPS) organized a health awareness program at the local mall on the occasion of Children’s Day, with the assistance and guidance of HUDH. The Department of Community Oral Health and Preventive Dentistry formulated the teams of house surgeons for one whole day activity under the supervision of Dr. Syed Muzzamil Ali Shah (Head of Department).
The event was coordinated by Dr. Wardah Ahmed from HUDH and Ms. Shafaq from HPS. Free dental check-ups and oral health awareness sessions were also conducted at this event. Emphasis was given to teaching teeth brushing techniques and educating children about avoidance of excessive candies and complete avoidance of betel nuts/chhalia.
Healthy eating during lunch hours should be encouraged in schools, and HUDH and HPS coordinated efforts to start bringing this change about in the future. The team included Dr Mohammad Ovais, Dr Nazish, Dr Zofishan, Dr Sidra, Dr Sara, Dr Warisha, Dr Uzma, Dr Saman, Dr Nikhaar, and Dr Kainat. Head Mistress Madam Merhreen acknowledged HUDH team efforts and recognized that events such as this pay the way for future collaboration in the improvement of oral health of the children of the community.
