Abbottabad: Abbottabad International Medical Institute, with collaboration of Abbottonians Medical Association® took the initiative to address the “General & Oral Health” needs of this population in Abbottabad.

Children with special needs is a term used for a wide range of diagnoses, including those that resolve quickly as well as involving those that will be a challenge for life and those that are relatively mild to those that are intense. These children may present with developmental delays, medical conditions, psychiatric issues, and congenital problems. These special needs require to be taken care of so children can reach their potential.

These special needs children cannot take care of themselves and are dependent on family and friends for life. Prevalence of medical as well as dental problems in this population is quite high when compared to healthy population.  Not only the frequency but severity of problems is another issue which needs attention. The best strategy to lower the burden of oral diseases in this population is the preventive measures.

The aim of this campaign was assessment of treatment needs as well as education of these kids regarding personal and oral hygiene practices. Physically and mentally challenged students of RISE School for Special Education were examined for their general and oral health on International Children’s Day: 1st June,2022. Complete medical and dental examination of 30 students aged 5-24 years was performed by medical and dental specialists. Oral health education was given to all students by using “Tell, Show & Do” techniques. Proper brushing technique was explained by using models. Students having hearing difficulty were explained the procedures with the help of their teachers using sign language.

Medical and Dental record of each student was maintained for further treatment and follow-ups. Copy of record of treatment needs was also handed over to staff for parents’ knowledge. At the end of program, eatables, oral hygiene kits and sports equipment was distributed among all students.

The visit was organized by Dr Noaman Siddiqui, Director Department of Medical Education, AIMI and Secretary General, Abbottonians Medical Association® in collaboration with The Volunteers Group (TVG), AIMI.  Prof Samia Shad, Dr Tayyaba Ijaz, Dr Khola Basit and TVG members from medical as well as dental college participated in the activity. Dr Qurrat ul Ain, Assistant Professor Community Dentistry, played a vital role in designing proformas for recording oral health status of students.
