KARACHI: Cleft Pakistan and it’s faculty in association with Liaquat College of Medicine & Dentistry arranged and organised a two-day symposium on ‘Orthognathic Surgery in Cleft Patients’ recently with the JSMU CME Accredited hours. 

The Chief Organisers were Prof Dr Navid Rashid Qureshi (Principal College of Dentistry-LCMD) & Prof Dr Ashraf Ganatra (Professor Plastic Surgery). Prof Dr Tahera Ayub (Administrator-Dental Hospital) was the moderator & organiser of the entire event. It was hosted by Dr Huzaifa Saeed ul Khair on day 1, & hosted and facilitated by Dr Mahnoor Zahid (Assistant Administrator-QDH) on day 2.

Like every year in LCMD, faculties from different fields & professional bodies are called upon to communicate as well as to share their ideas, views & knowledge on their respective subjects of interest. This symposium was essential for professionals as well as for our students & graduates who desire to achieve brilliance in this respective field. 

More than 80 participants got themselves registered for this symposium from various cities including Karachi, Hyderabad & Quetta. On day 1, there was a Live Surgery & Discussion Session arranged. In which renowned Cleft, Orthognathic & Maxillofacial Surgeons in took part. The case was operated by Prof Dr Adnan Aslam (HOD, Depart OMFS, Margalla Institute of Health Sciences, Rawalpindi) and Prof Dr Noor ul Wahab (HOD, Depart OMFS, Ziauddin College of Dentistry, Karachi) at OT in LCMD/DSH & assisted by maxillofacial & plastic surgery residents. The procedure they did was Segmental Lefort 1 Osteotomy & Alveolar Bone Grafting. 

Live surgery was also being displayed on multiple multimedia screens for the participants to observe the case being operated and mic system was also setup for the communication between the participants sitting in the hall & surgeons in OT for questions & answers regarding their queries related to the case. 

The purpose of conducting the session was to provide a platform to update the knowledge of the residents from different fields including Maxillofacial, Orthognathic & Plastic Surgery. As such cases are quite unique and informative. Updating and equipping the residents has always been the prime aspect of our institute. 

Day 2 of the symposium was all about the Interactive Talk and Case Discussions with National Cleft, Orthognathic & Maxillofacial Specialists. All the reputed and top notch consultants of the specialty were there to put in the efforts to facilitate the participants by solving their queries related to different topics and cases being discussed. Their objective was also to enable the trainees to understand the examination process thoroughly, so the entire activity of case based session was designed accordingly along with question answers session. This session was fruitful & helped everyone to identify their weak points that require improvement as this topic has not been yet discussed to the extent! Though it should have been, the reason being the lack of expertise in our part of the world & in this particular field.

Our respected key speakers for Day 2 were: Prof Dr  Ashraf Ganatra (Professor of Plastic Surgery MBBS, MS (Plastic Surgery), Prof Dr Adnan Aslam (HOD, Depart OMFS, Margalla Institute of Health Sciences, Rawalpindi), Prof Dr Noor ul Wahab (HOD, Depart OMFS, Ziauddin College of Dentistry, Karachi, Dr Armaghan Mirza (Associate Prof Dept OMFS, King Edward Medical University, Lahore) and Prof Dr Afeef Umar Zia (HOD, Dept Orthodontics, Margalla Institute of Health Sciences, Rawalpindi. 

Second day was started with the name of Allah (SWT) by recitation of surah asar. After that a small welcome note was given for our respected key speakers.

The First Speaker of the day was Prof Dr Ashraf Ganatra from Karachi. Who talked about “His Journey in Cleft Care” he also talked about his entire journey in cleft care also talked about his charity work for patients with Cleft Lip & Palate. 

The Second speaker of the day was Prof Dr Afeef Umar Zia from Rawalpindi. A prominent figure in the field of Orthodontics. He discussed his topic “Essential Orthodontics in Cleft Patients” showed his various different treated cases and did justice to this important component of Orthognathic Surgery by his enlightened talk.  

The Third speaker was Dr Armaghan Mirza from Lahore.  He talked about “Alveolar Bone Grafting in Cleft Patients” by discussing and showing various operated cases and kept the audience engaged throughout his time slot. 

The Fourth speaker of day was Prof Dr Adnan Aslam from Rawalpindi; a leading and reputed oral and maxillofacial surgeon. He enlightened us about the various aspects on “Skeletal Correction of Cleft Maxilla” he also kept the audience engaged by his interactive talk and did justice to his topic. 

The Fifth speaker of the day was another yet the most renowned, great, dedicated, expert & a well-known OMFS surgeon of Karachi. None other than Prof Dr Noor ul Wahab having almost 18 years of experience in his field. He discussed his topic on “Mandibular Orthognathic Surgery” showed his various Orthognathic surgical cases along with a video. That kept the audience more enthusiastic. He also enlisted and highlighted various management protocols of mandibular Orthognathic surgery

Proceeding further all the reputable speakers including started a case based discussion session. 

Prof Dr Afeef Umar Zia showed 5 of his cases of Orthognathic Surgery Including One case of Orthognathic Surgery in Cleft Patient. All the cases included brief history & examination along with clinical, radiographic and cephalametric pictures of each case. Each and every speaker interacted with the audience and started a cross questioning session related to the cases.

The session was ended by closing remarks and vote of thanks by Prof Dr Tahera Ayub, a maxillofacial surgeon, an amazing administrator of dental college and an amazing dental educationist. 

(Principal, College of Dentistry), Prof Dr Navid Rashid Qureshi, the ever-leading figure in all the events conducted in Liaquat College of Medicine & Dentistry, and the man behind the resounding success of this very seminar. It can be said without any doubt that the event was made possible because of his expert guidance and moral support. LCMD has always taken pride in having this highly celebrated dignitary amongst its faculty. He has always been the source of inspiration for the entire team of LCMD and the Pillar of Strength whenever such bigger events are conducted. 

We as an institution would like to present our deep gratitude, appreciation & special thanks to all the respected speakers for their valuable contribution to this symposium. For their outstanding hard-work, going above & beyond their regular job duties. It is a high time when we envision the learning we want to occur and analyze how all the pieces of the learning experience should fit together to make that vision a reality in the field of Maxillofacial, Orthodontics and Plastic Surgery.

The program was fully appraised by everyone especially in terms of training content, activities involved & time management as well as gaining and implementing vast knowledge related to Orthognathic Cases. We are highly obliged to Cleft Pakistan & Liaquat College of Medicine & Dentistry for creating a platform for all the residents as well as consultants for providing vast knowledge under one roof. Their constant support helped in organizing this event for the betterment and flourishment for upcoming surgeons.
