The "Godfather of Orthodontics", Dr Proffit Passes Away

October 2 2018- The "Godfather of Orthodontics", Dr Proffit passed away. An account by a focal person from University of North Carolina School of Dentistry (UNC) says, "We lost one of our own this morning: Dr. William (Bill) Proffit. He was 82 years of age. To try to enumerate all of Dr. Proffit’s accomplishments during his incredible career would be a fool’s errand; there are far too many remarkable achievements. His incredible expertise and unprecedented influence on orthodontics was acknowledged and admired not only in the United States but around the world. He earned global recognition as one of the leaders in orthodontics. He authored Contemporary Orthodontics, which is considered the definitive text for pre-doctoral and post-doctoral orthodontics students. Only recently the book's sixth edition was completed, and printed in 12 languages. During his career, Dr. Proffit published more than 200 scientific papers, and 20 book chapters. Our school was fortunate to have Dr. Proffit join our faculty in 1975. "

Dr WIlliam (Bill) Proffit



At UNC, Dr Proffit served as the Chairman of Department of Orthodontics from 1975 to 2001. He later went on to become a Kenan Distinguished Professor, followed by Emeritus Professor at the same university. He held the latter position until his passing away recently.
