If not removed effectively, plaque can transform into tartar or calculus over time and cause inflammation around the gums and further infections.

It all starts with poor oral hygiene.

Dental hygiene is an integral part of daily routine. After all, the mouth is the gateway to your body. Ensuring effective oral hygiene practices ensures the overall health of your body.

Poor oral hygiene leads to plaque. Plaque is an accumulation of microorganisms and food debris on teeth. If not removed effectively, it can transform into tartar or calculus over time and cause inflammation around the gums and further infections.

Ways to prevent plaque and calculus

There are some ways you can prevent plaque from forming and morphing into calculus.

Adequate brushing

Effectively brushing your teeth is the first step towards good oral hygiene. Dentists advise brushing teeth at a 45-degree angle twice a day for two minutes in a circular motion. They also advise using a soft bristle toothbrush with slow motions. Vigorous brushing can cause trauma to the teeth and gums.

Tartar control toothpaste

Fluoride toothpaste possesses the capability of fighting germs and decay. Moreover, some toothpaste incorporates Triclosan and pyrophosphates as active elements that attack the germs in plaque and prevent the biofilm from forming.

Floss, floss and floss!

No matter how good you brush your teeth, you still cannot remove plaque between your teeth. Flossing is the only way to eliminate plaque and accumulated food between teeth. These inaccessible parts can be accessed by dental floss. Pairing dental floss with effective brushing is the right way to go.

Healthy diet

A diet full of junk and sugary foods renders a person more prone to calculus. Bacteria in the mouth thrive on sugary and starchy foods, and they release acids in the mouth. To reduce plaque accumulation, switch to a healthy diet full of fibre and protein. Drink a lot of water and reduce coffee and tea consumption.

Dental visits

Once calculus is formed, you will need professional cleaning to get rid of it. Visiting your dentist every six months ensures complete debridement and further maintenance instructions. Missing out on your dental appointments is not wise.

Dentistry isn't expensive but neglect is

Removal of calculus is not only important for a brighter smile but also for preventing further dental problems. Regular tooth brushing and dental visits are essential to keep your teeth in check.
