PMA urges precautionary steps to avoid mpox spread

KARACHI: Expressing grave concern over the recent cases of monkeypox surfacing cases in Karachi, the Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) has advised the people to take precautionary measures to avoid contacting and spreading the viral disease, besides urging government to ensure detection and monitoring of suspected patients.

Monkeypox, an uncommon viral ailment, possesses the potential for human-to-human and animal-to-human transmission, occasionally spreading through contact with contaminated surfaces touched by an infected person.

The PMA seeks immediate and stringent measures to curb the further dissemination of this disease, particularly at all entry points of the country, including airports, seaports, and border crossings.

The PMA underscores the necessity for the heightened screening of travelers arriving from afflicted regions, with a view to promptly identifying potential monkeypox cases. Anyone displaying symptoms associated with monkeypox should be expeditiously isolated and provided with appropriate medical care.

Furthermore, the PMA strongly advises the community to take proactive measures to protect themselves against monkeypox, alongside receiving vaccinations.

These precautionary steps include refraining from contact with potentially infected persons and animals, particularly those exhibiting signs of illness or found deceased. It is essential to avoid coming into contact with contaminated bedding and materials that may have been exposed to the virus.

The PMA says that ensuring thorough cooking of animal meat or parts is imperative to eliminate any potential viral threat. It suggests frequent and thorough hand washing with soap and water.

When interacting with suspected infected individuals, it is advisable to wear masks that cover both the mouth and nose when in close proximity, urges the association, besides routine cleaning and disinfection of frequently touched surfaces.

Moreover, it advises use of appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when caring for individuals known to be infected with the virus.

These measures collectively contribute to safeguarding the community against the spread of monkeypox.

Concerning vaccination, the PMA says it is prudent to administer vaccines primarily to individuals at elevated risk, such as close contacts of confirmed monkeypox cases or those belonging to high-risk exposure groups. Mass vaccination campaigns are currently not advised, it adds.

The PMA underscores the urgency for swift and effective actions to curb the spread of monkeypox within Karachi and to avert its dissemination to other regions of the country.

It suggests robust public awareness initiatives to educate the populace about the symptoms of monkeypox, the significance of early detection, and the importance of seeking prompt medical attention. Healthcare professionals should be proficiently trained to promptly identify and diagnose the disease, it adds.

The PMA underscores the need for collaborative efforts by the government, healthcare authorities, and the community to ensure the overall well-being and safety of the population.
