FJDC celebrates World Senior Citizen Day

Karachi: Fatima Jinnah Dental College (FJDC) recognises and celebrates Senior Citizen Day on the 21st August 2022. This day was observed by promoting the importance of senior citizens’ good mental and physical well being.

World Senior Citizen’s Day is celebrated on the 21st August to acknowledge and appreciate the senior citizens for the contributions and accomplishments they have made throughout their lives. In addition, this day is observed to also recognize and raise awareness of the challenges faced by the elderly community, particularly issues related to health and elderly abuse. The proportion of the elderly is expected to rise significantly in the coming decades in light of the changing global demographics, which in turn will give rise to new challenges.

The United Nations projects that by 2050, under-developed nations will be home to 1.1 billion people over the age of 65, which is more than two-thirds of the entire world's old-age population. Therefore, to adequately care for the aging population and lower the incidence of neglect and elderly abuse, robust healthcare systems for the elderly will need to be established to match this growth.

Fatima Jinnah Dental College (FJDC) recognizes the importance of our elders and their place in the community. We observe this day by promoting the importance of senior citizens’ good mental and physical fitness.  We focus on the health of the elderly population by encouraging a nutritious diet, light exercise and pain management. In addition, our nurses are trained and have competent skills to provide care for elderly patients that walk into our hospitals, so that they may receive treatment and are as comfortable as possible.

To facilitate them, our Azam Town General Hospital has a Wheel Chair Ramp that gives easy access to the disabled and elderly people. We are also planning to introduce a fast-track OPD queue in our hospital to facilitate senior citizens. FJDC also advocates that Geriatrics Dentistry (Dental care for older adults) should evolve in Pakistan in the same manner as Pediatric Dentistry has.

We request other hospitals and institutions to make arrangements that accommodate the elderly so that moving forward, this day is observed in Pakistan wholeheartedly. Join us in our journey to establish an inclusive society, with our elders watching over us.
