Over 70 pc of foreign medical, dental graduates fails Pakistan’s license exam

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Medical Commission (PMC) recently released the summary report of medical and dental students' National Licensing Examination (NLE) held in March 2022.

The commission conducted the NLE Step-I exams in March 2022 and declared the final result in April.

According to the report, 82.82 per cent of Pakistan's medical graduates who appeared in the exam cleared the NLE, whereas only 12.67 per cent of foreign medical graduates who appeared in the exam were declared successful.

On the other hand, 64.15 per cent of national dental graduates seated for the exam passed the NLE. However, the result for foreign dental graduates remained at 29.17 per cent.

Recently the PMC spokesperson stated that, due to a lack of resources, hospitals, language barriers, and a shortage of patients and beds, a number of foreign medical and dental institutes awarded degrees without a house job or providing any practical clinical experience, which he asserted was one of the main reasons for foreign graduates' low pass percentage in the NLE exams.

PMC has performed NLE twice in order to grant licences to interested international graduates, according to the spokesperson. He maintained that the purpose of conducting NLEs for foreign graduates also was to assess their intellectual and practical abilities before granting them a licence. PMC is working not just to improve the quality of healthcare standards but also to protect patients' rights, he added.

Registrations for NLE and NEB Medical & Dental for May & June session 2022 are now open on the PMC website. The last date for registration is April 21 & 25, 2022.
