16 medical & dental colleges participate in intercollege quiz competition

KARACHI: An intercollege quiz competition was recently held at the Liaquat College of Medicine and Dentistry for all of BDS as well as first-year MBBS students. Students from 16 colleges were invited to participate in this quiz competition including the Bahria University, Liaquat College of Medicine & Dentistry, Bhitai Dental & Medical College, Liaquat National Hospital, Dow International Medical College, Sindh Institute of Oral Health Sciences, Fatima Jinnah Dental College, Sir Syed College Of Medical Sciences, Hamdard College of Medicine & Dentistry, Ziauddin University, and the Karachi Medical and Dental College.                       

The competition was organized by Dr Naheed Najmi (HOD Operative Dentistry and Vice-Principal Dental College, LCMD), Professor Dr Irfan Ashraf, Prof Dr Talat Yasmeen, Dr Zareen Naz, Dr Tazeen Zehra, and lecturers from the departments of Operative Dentistry and Anatomy.

The event commenced with the name of Allah, the Almighty. Dr Saadat Ali Khan recited a few verses from the Holy Quran on day-1, and final year BDS student, Sarmad Sulaiman, on day-2. The national anthem followed the recitation. Dr Farah Zaman hosted the event.

The quiz competition was a two-day event. The first day consisted of two sessions. The first session being the anatomy quiz for first-year MBBS, and the second was for first-year and second-year BDS students, which encompassed basic dental science subjects. The third session was on day-2 for third and fourth-year BDS students comprising of clinical dentistry subjects.

Each session had three rounds. In round 1, individual team members were questioned. In round 2, scenario-based questions were asked, and team members were allowed to discuss answers among themselves. Round 3 was pictorial based, and team members were allowed to discuss solutions among themselves.

Participants, students, and faculty members from the participating colleges were present at the event.

For making the quiz interesting and interactive, questions were asked from the audience as well. Prizes were distributed among students who gave the right answers.

Dr Zaheer Amjad, HOD, ENT Department, DIMC, was invited as the judge for the anatomy quiz on Day 1. Professor Dr Abrar Ali, HOD, Operative Dentistry, HCMD, was invited as the judge for the second session on Day 1. Dr Zafar Iqbal, HOD, Dental Public Health, BDMC, was invited as the judge for the third session.

Professor Dr Tariq Rafi honored the event with his presence as the Chief Guest. He appreciated the efforts of Liaquat College of Medicine and Dentistry in organizing, encouraging, and motivating such an activity. Professor Dr Irfan Ashraf and Dr Navid Rasheed welcomed and greeted the Chief Guest.

Chairman, Liaquat College of Medicine and Dentistry, Mr Amir Waliuddin Chishti, also honored the event with his presence. The Principal congratulated the honorable Chief Guest for achieving the Presidential Award of Tamgha-e-Imtiaz and presented him with a memento.

The first session, being the anatomy quiz, was won by the Dow International Medical College, Sindh Institute of Oral Health Sciences won the second session, and Ziauddin Dental College emerged as the winner of day-2 quiz based on clinical dentistry subjects. Team leaders from all the colleges shared their experience regarding the quiz competition with the audience. Shields were distributed to the winning teams by Prof. Dr Tariq Rafi.

Prof Dr Talat Yasmeen and Dr Naheed Najmi thanked the Principal, Dr Navid Rasheed, the event organizers, and the administration of the Liaquat College of Medicine and Dentistry for their efforts. They also thanked the participating colleges and their coordinators for encouraging and guiding their students to participate in the event and for making the event a success.
