ISLAMABAD: Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi recently honoured 86 overseas Pakistanis for their contribution to host societies during the coronavirus pandemic, saying they were the real ambassadors of the country.
“Their acts of kindness, performed without any consideration for reward or recognition, in the face of difficult circumstances, exemplify the true nature and spirit of the Pakistani nation. Such individuals and groups of Pakistanis are the heroes of the nation, and the real ambassadors of the country,” Mr Qureshi said while interacting with overseas Pakistanis whose services had been recognised, at a webinar.
The Foreign Office said the minister as part of his initiative to reach out to overseas Pakistanis, and in the context of August 14 celebrations, honoured 86 Pakistanis from across the world for contributing to combating the Covid-19 pandemic. They included individuals and organisations that had assisted in “alleviating the suffering of humanity during these challenging times”.
The categories of honourees included those being recognised posthumously; medical professionals; donors; facilitators and associations.
Mr Qureshi said overseas Pakistanis were an important asset for the country. He spoke about the national effort in fighting the Covid-19 pandemic, including the policy of testing, tracing and quarantine and smart lockdowns; stimulus to selected industries; financial relief to the underprivileged in the shape of the Ehsaas programme; and the repatriation of over 412,000 Pakistanis from abroad through 478 special flights.
