Baqai’s Silver Jubilee exhibition gets under way

KARACHI- Baqai Dental College having commenced its educational activities way back in 1990, organized its Silver Jubilee exhibition, titled ‘Planet’, on 17th & 18th December, planned and executed by Dr Asghar Ali Shigri, Departmental Head of Community Dentistry.

The purpose behind this exhibition to project BDC’s contribution and achievements in the field of oral healthcare, academics and community services render during the past 25 years.  ‘Planet’ encompassed not only BDC’s services through projections of multiple designed stalls but also models/posters.  Students and faculty of different colleges and institutions from all over Pakistan participated. The exhibition was inaugurated by Mrs. Zahida Baqai, Vice Chancellor BMU and also Principal BDC. Professor Fareed uddin Baqai, chancellor BMU, also visited the exhibition and commended the students’ efforts.

Primary Health Care models were made by second year BDS students, under the guidance of Dr Asghar Ali Shigri. Dr Fareed uddin Baqai commended the efforts of community dentistry department, and directed Dr. Shigri to arrange a session in which the Chancellor himself would deliver a lecture so as to encourage students’ |performance in making the primary health care models.

At another session held on 20th January 2015, at Saeeda Auditorium, Baqai Medical University, and attended by Deans, Directors, Principals, Faculty Members, and students of Baqai Medical University.

Dr Farid Uddin Baqai spoke of the university’s vision and mission, saying that BMU was the first private sector Medical University that met the needs of over 20 million people. He talked of the Baqai’s Community Oriented Medical & Dental Education(COMDE) programs as having played a vital role  by providing healthcare and educational amenities to the people of Pakistan. He said that BMU has focused on improving the medical and dental health of a highly diverse population by initiating a number of public health and community welfare project. BMU initiated programs to improve health of low income as well as the under-privileged populations residing around Gharo, Thatta, Badin and other underserved areas of Karachi and its outskirts.

He further highlighted the working of Primary Health Care Centers such as:

Baqai Medical University including unit-1; Baqai Medical Complex Khush haal nagar Gharo; Baqai Medical Complex Khuda ki Basti; Fehmi Health Education Center and PWC Layari

At all the PHC centers free-of-cost education is given to poor children, providing medical and dental care facilitates to all patients visiting these centers, besides free food for children. Focus is given to vocational training programs developed for willing children to learn certain skills so that they can earn for themselves for better living conditions.

Lastly, he expressed his desire for establishing 600 Primary Health Care Centers all over Pakistan to cater to 60 million people living below the poverty line.

In the end prizes were distributed among the students - Rida, Hafsa, Kiran, Sidra, Waqar and Ibrahim.

Shields were also presented to Dr Baqai & Dr Zahida Baqai for their lasting contribution in the field of health sciences.-PR
