Female dentist succeeds to prove maltreatment by senior

FAISALABAD: Dr Ayesha Qaiser, after a period of eight months recently succeeded to establish that she had been roughed up by the medical superintendent of the hospital and now a lower court has summoned the suspect.

Dr Asif Hameed Saleemi, now MS at DHQ Hospital, has been found guilty of roughing up Dr Ayesha Qaiser in an inquiry conducted by the Iqbal Town SP.

Dr Saleemi had been serving as head of the Government General Hospital, Haseeb Shaheed Colony, where the incident took place.

Dr Ayesha, a dental surgeon, submitted a private complaint to the district and sessions judge requesting action against Dr Saleemi and others for roughing her up and snatching her belongings.

She said on April 17 last, she was on duty when [her colleague] Dr Amaal Zaib came there and allegedly started beating her.

She said Dr Saleemi also reached the spot, hurled threats, and attacked her due to which she received an injury to her hand.

"Dr Zaib snatched her camera, mobile phone, and bangles," she alleged.

She said hospital servant Jamshaid came there and after beseeching Dr Saleemi, got her mobile phone returned to her and she made a call to Rescue 15 regarding the incident.

The Batala Colony police reached the spot and got recovered her camera, excluding her bangles.

Elaborating reason for the incident, she alleged Dr Saleemi through a patient, had moved a complaint [about misbehaviour] against her and on the basis of which, they started harassing and blackmailing her.

She said a case was registered against Dr Saleemi and others, adding Batala Colony Inspector Abbas conducted the faulty investigation and cancelled the FIR [in connivance with the suspects].

"After going through the report of the SP, the complaint, cursory statements of witnesses, MLC bearing No.245-05/20, still intact and other available documents annexed by the complainant, prima facie, the complaint seems to be true to the extent of accused MS Dr Asif Hameed Saleemi and Dr Amaal Zaib," magistrate Nasrullah said.

The court has summoned Dr Saleemi and Dr Zaib for Jan 9 to face the trial of the case.

Police registered a case against MS Saleemi, Dr Zaib, Dr Naeem, and Dr Khalil under sections 34,337-A(I), 337(L), 337F(I), 354, 379, 427, and 509 of the PPC with no arrest.

Dr Ayesha had to approach the courts for registration of a case against the suspects as the police did not move on to the application filed by her.

A couple of months ago, a two-member committee comprising Deputy Director Development Syed Naveed Iqbal and Additional Deputy Commissioner (Headquarters) Afifa Shajia, formed by DC Muhammad Ali, also probed the issue and found Dr Saleemi guilty of manhandling Dr Ayesha and snatching a camera from her.

The committee had recommended only censure as a penalty for Dr Saleemi and transfer of the complainant doctor.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) Faisalabad Secretary Dr Muhammad Irfan, an assistant professor of medicine at the Allied Hospital, said the camera footage proved that Dr Ayesha had been roughed up by Dr Saleemi; however, the police cancelled the FIR.
