COVID-19 decreases life expectancy, study reports

LONDON - According to Oxford University's recent study, the life expectancy in 2020 reduced to the largest since World War II due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The study analysed that the life expectancy dropped by more than two years among American men. It fell by more than six months compared with 2019 in most countries encompassing Europe, the United States and Chile. Reductions in life expectancy have been seen in 27 of the 29 countries overall.

The research linked the life expectancy reductions across different countries to documented COVID-19 deaths. Until now, there have been almost 5 million reported deaths caused by the new coronavirus.

The drops in life expectancy for men has been more than women in most countries, with the most considerable reduction in American men.

The rise in mortality was mainly among the working-age group and those under 60 in the United States. In Europe, most mortalities were seen among people over 60.
