Rotary Endodontics: The Effective Root Canal Treatment

Good oral health needs to keep the teeth sound in the mouth, and root canal treatment helps keep diseased teeth intact in the oral cavity.

Conventional endodontics

Conventionally, endodontics (root canal treatment) is performed with a stainless steel file, leading to an unsatisfactory root canal shape. A long treatment time can lead to patients' non- cooperation.

Rotary root canal treatment

The introduction of nickel-titanium in endodontics, including various root canal preparation techniques especially using rotary instruments, has become popular to eliminate these shortcomings and provide better quality root canal fillings in a shorter time.

The technique for rotary endodontics

The specifications of instruments are different from those used for traditional endodontic files and reamers. The technique involves preparing the coronal part of the root canal using a Gates Glidden drill bit and ProFile instruments. Only when the coronal part of the root canal is removed, a traditional file be used to determine the working length. Only the ProFile instrument is used to prepare the apical part of the root canal. By using the GT rotary file, the dentist can avoid excessive damage to the coronal part of the root canal.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Ni-Ti instruments

The advantages of the Ni-Ti rotary instruments are that the flexible structure maintains the original shape of the root canal and reduces iatrogenic errors while preserving the original anatomical structure. In addition, it effectively cleans the irregular root canals of the deciduous molars, ensures uniform filling, and reduces apical root leakage. The tapered preparation, smooth tube wall and rapid treatment increases patient cooperation and reduces doctor fatigue.

Disadvantages of Ni-Ti rotary instruments are the increased risk of device breakage due to misapplication (because it is a sensitive technology), cost, and the need for expertise.

Rotary endodontics in deciduous teeth

Patient cooperation is a very important factor in determining the success of treatment, especially in pediatric dentistry. The root canal treatment of deciduous teeth can be performed with a traditional stainless steel file and Ni-Ti rotary instrument system.

Using Ni-Ti rotary instruments, the root canal treatment of deciduous teeth can be done in a hassle-free environment in a single visit, with efficacy ensured.
