A Chinese dentist-robot successfully fit implants in a patient’s mouth without human assistance – are robots posing a threat to dentists’ jobs?
The success of this procedure has raised both hopes for technology and fear for dentists’ jobs. Should dentists be feeling threatened for their jobs now that robots can perform dental procedures?
China’s epidemic survey has found there were about 400 million patients needing new teeth, but the number of qualified dentists is lagging behind demand. Around one million implants are carried out across the country each year and the delays patients face can often cause further problems after surgery has been conducted. This indicates that the scarcity of a service was responsible for the creation of the robot.
