Dental Seminar at JPMC's 50th Annual Symposium

The Jinnah Post-Graduate Medical Center (JPMC) Karachi, recently held its 50th Annual Medical Symposium (Golden Jubilee) celebration from 23rd till 29th March, 2014. One part of this insightful Symposium was a Dental Seminar held on the 28th of March, at JPMC.

A number of leading dental experts and academicians enriched the seminar with their knowledge and shared their learning experiences with the dental community. The Programme was chaired by the renowned dentist – Professor Dr. Navid Rashid from Liaquat College of Medicine and Dentistry. The Ex-Chief of JPMC's Dental Section – Professor Dr. Mushtaq Memon was the Co-Chairman of the session, along with Dr. Rehana Mahar from KMDC and Dr. Jahan Alam - Head of Dental Deptt at JPMC.

Dr. Rehana Mahar began the proceedings with a valuable discussion on “Tobacco Cessation”; talking about the strategies and medications for quitting smoking and the role of Dentists and legislation against Tobacco use.

Dr. Noor ul Wahab – a Maxillofacial surgeon from Ziauddin Medical University made a presentation on “The Role of Oral and Maxillo facial Surgeons in Facial Aesthetics”, where he discussed numerous cases of Dental Trauma treatments and restorative dentistry, which adds to the patients' Confidence, Aesthetics, and function of the teeth.

Dr. Mehmood Hussain from Hamdard College of Dentistry gave a lecture on; Immediate Dentures for Diabetic patients. These are dentures that are placed immediately after an extraction to improve the patients aesthetics and confidence. Later, Dr. Indra Aneel from the Dental Department of JPMC discussed a unique case study on; “Limited Mouth Opening” which was caused by Congenital Syngnathia or Maxillo Mandibular fusion. Afterwards, Dr. Jahan Alam – FCPS & Incharge of Dental department at JPMC, delivered a lecture on “Complications of Dental Reconstruction Plates” used for Mandibular defects.

The following lecture was conducted by Dr. Syed Abrar Ali – Head of Operative Dentistry at Hamdard College of Dentistry. Dr. Abrar's topic was “Stress in Life and its impact on Dentition, while he also explained the reasons for Teeth Grinding and Clenching, which results in Myofacial Pain Syndrome.

These enlightening lectures were followed by a Research contest among the outstanding students from various institutions. The contest was won by Dr. Sehrish Khan Abbasi- a student of JPMC, who bagged the first position for her presentation on “Histopathological Evaluations and Oral/Maxillofacial Tumors.

Other presenters included; Dr. Mehwish Habib a student of Sir Syed Dental College, who presented her research on “Pakistani Facial Profiles” and Dr. Ahsan Mustafa from Karachi Medical and Dental College, with his presentation on: “Epitheloid Hemangioendothelioma” a complex case of dental disease.
