DOW’s Community Outreach Program

Karachi: An Oral Health Awareness Program by the Department of Community and Preventive Dentistry, Dow Dental College, was organized at Kotval Government School, under the supervision of  Dr. Muhammad Taqi, Head Of Department, Community and Preventive Dentistry.

The primary objective of this program was to provide basic knowledge regarding oral hygiene, awareness of oral diseases and proper brushing techniques to all the students as well as the teachers, so they further guide their families on how to maintain good oral hygiene.

Dr. Hina Toufique and Dr. Adnan Sukkurwala supervised the dental students of 3rd year BDS, who performed intra-oral examinations on school children and gave presentation regarding oral health awareness. The students also carried out comprehensive dental check-ups, during which tooth decay, staining, plaque and tartar deposits were commonly reported.

After conducting dental examinations, an informative and interactive session was organized with school’s children . During this session, teachers were informed to discourage their students from consuming sweets, supaaris, gutka, junk food and fizzy beverages, and explain their adverse effects on their oral health. To enhance the level of compliance to the instructions provided, free tooth paste samples were distributed amongst the school children, to further encourage them to take care of their oral hygiene.

The event was successful and highly appreciated by the administrative and teaching staff of the school.
