PPA organizes first Intl Prosthodontic Conference By Dr Ali Raza

 
Lahore — First International Prosthodontic Conference was held here under the aegis of Pakistan Prosthodontic Association (PPA) at University of Health Sciences from Oct 12 to15. The aim of organizing the moot was to transform Oral Health-related Quality of Life through functional and esthetics restorations,
Doctors from all over the country attended in large numbers. Khawja Salman Rafiq, Advisor to Punjab chief minister on Health was the chief guest on the occasion whereas Prof. (Dr) B. A. Yazdanie and Prof. (Dr) Tariq Zaman were the guests of honor. Prof (Dr) Nazia Yazdanie, President PPA along with other senior members including Dr Asif Ali Shah, Dr Fazal-e-Ghani and Dr Sajid Naeem also attended. In his inaugural speech, Khawja Salman Rafiq, highlighted the importance of oral health care and praised the PPA's efforts in organizing the conference Dr Nazia Yazdanie, President PPA and Organizing Committee's chairperson presented welcome address while Dr Asif Ali Shah gave a vote of thanks. Foreign delegates to the conference included Prof (Dr) Cees de Baat (President European Prosthodontic Association and President European College of Gerodontology), Prof (Dr) Michel H. Steenks (Radboud University, Netherlands), Prof. (Dr) Mutlu Ozcan (University of Groningen, Groningen, Netherlands). Various scientific sessions in which state-of-the-art lectures concerning removable partial denture, fixed partial denture, dental implants and temporo-mandibular disorders were delivered by foreign and local experts. First scientific session began with a lecture by Prof. (Dr) C. de Baat on significant aspects of removable complete denture treatment. It was followed by Prof. Steenks who lectured on how to integrate research findings in clinical approach regarding role of occlusion in temporo-mandibular disorders. The session was chaired by Prof. (Dr) Yaqoob Baig Mirza with Prof (Dr) Sajid Naeem as the co-chairman. Second session was chaired by Prof. (Dr) Waheed-ul-Hamid with Prof. (Dr) Qasim Saeed as the co-chairman and Prof. Dr. Abdul Moeed Zaigham as secretary. In her lecture, Prof Ozcan shared her long-term clinical experience with direct versus indirect bonded bridges. It was followed by Dr Asif Ali Shah's lecture in which he discussed his views on "trouble-shooting: loose ill-fitting dentures". The third session was chaired by Prof. Nazia Yazdanie with Dr Fazal-e-Ghani as the co-chair and Dr Asif Ali Shah as secretary. Prof. Ozcan elaborated criteria of selection of materials for CAD/CAM. One special session was allocated to the postgraduate research competition among PG trainees. Dr Umar Javed (AFID) grabbed first position while Dr Sumera Anwar and Dr Aamir Rafiq (de'Montmorency College of Dentsitry) got second and third positions, respectively. All the speakers including first three position-holders were awarded cash prizes. It was jointly chaired by Prof Nazia Yazdanie, Prof. Sajid Naeem, Dr Nabeela Riaz and Dr Hina Zafar Raja. Scientific sessions concluded with a panel discussion on "Transforming Oral Health-related Quality of Life through Functional and Esthetics restorations". Apart from scientific sessions pre-conference symposia and post-conference workshops were also held under supervision of foreign and local senior professionals. SYMPOSIUMS Symposium on "Occlusion & Temporo-mandibular Disorders" was conducted by Prof. (Dr) Michel H. Steenks and Prof Nazia Yazdanie. The session was chaired by Prof. B. A. Yazdanie with Prof. (Dr) Moghees Baig as the secretary. Prof. Steenks elaborated various aspects of temporo-mandibular disorders including their anatomical, physiological, radiological and clinical aspects. Prof Nazia Yazdanie highlighted recent advances regarding role of occlusion in temporo-mandibular disorders. Symposium on "Removable Partial Denture" was conducted by Prof. (Dr) Cees de Baat, and Dr Fazal-e-Ghani, KCD Peshawar. Session was chaired by Prof. (Dr) Tariq Zaman with Gen. (Retd) Noor Hussain as the co-chairman.  During their lectures, Prof. Baat and Dr Ghani described clinical implications related with removable partial dentures. WORKSHOPS Workshop on "Fixed Partial Dentures" was conducted by Prof. (Dr) Mutlu Ozcan and Dr Asif Ali Shah. During their lectures, Prof. Ozcan and Dr. Asif described clinical implications related to fixed partial dentures. Workshop on "Dental Implant" was conducted by Prof. (Dr) Stewart Harding, Clinical Director, Dental Implants Courses, Warwick University (UK) and Prof Nazia Yazdanie. Prof. Yazdanie spoke about the recent advances made in implants dentistry. Prof. Harding laid stress on clinical implications of implants. The conference was followed by a scientific exhibition.
