Session on Pain Management organized at SMBB Trauma Centre

Karachi: The Oral & Maxillofacial Department of the Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) in collaboration with the Pakistan Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons organized a workshop on the topic of “Treatment of TMJ Arthropathies with Arthrocentesis”, a patient management session, at the Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto (SMBB) Trauma Centre.

Diplomat American Board Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Dr. Bert Welch Winterholler, was the principal speaker of the event. Dean, Faculty of Dentistry, Prof Dr Anwar Ali, and Chairperson, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Prof Dr Shahjahan Katpar, were the program directors. Associate Professor, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Dr Abdul Hafeez Sheikh, and Assistant Professor OMFS Dr Mutada Ahemd were the workshop coordinators.

A large number of maxillofacial surgeons including, Prof Dr Mehmood Haider, Dr Naveed Rasheed Qureshi, Dr Yasmin Kharal and others, participated in the workshop which was followed by live surgeries of selected patients were performed by Dr Bert Welch Winterholler and his team.

In his lecture, American Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, Dr Bert Welch Winterholler, urged the maxillofacial surgeons to apply close arthrocentesis procedure for the management of TMJ arthropathies instead of open arthropathies as this procedure is more effective and protects patients from morbidity.

He explained that arthrocentesis is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that relieves joint stiffness from fluid build-up. He said arthrocentesis is only one of a variety of options for helping one live pain-free.

Chairperson, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Prof Dr Shahjahan Katpar, stated that this was the first time, an American Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, Dr Bert Welch Winterholler, had paid a visit Pakistan to train practicing and young maxillofacial surgeons for the management of TMJ Arthropathies with Arthrocentesis techniques with the individual efforts of Vice Chancellor DUHS, Prof Dr Saeed Qureshi.

A question and answer session was also held for young doctors while shields were also distributed amongst the guests. Certificates were awarded to participants.
