What To Expect From World Oral Health Day 2018

What Is World Oral Health Day (WOHD)?

World Oral Health Day (WOHD) is an international day to celebrate the many benefits of a healthy mouth, and to create awareness about oral health issues and highlight the importance of oral hygiene. It is a day for people to have fun, and enjoy activities that will make people of all ages, all around the world smile, laugh and celebrate oral health.

Why Is WOHD Important?

Approximately 90% of the world’s population will suffer from oral diseases in their lifetime and many of these issues can be avoided with increased governmental, health association and society support and funding for prevention, detection and treatment programmes.

World Oral Health Day is the ideal opportunity for the dental and oral health community to take action and help reduce the overall disease burden of Pakistan.

This year’s theme:

The “Say Ahh” theme is a three-year campaign launched in 2018, starting with Think Mouth, Think Health as the first sub-theme.

The goal is to empower every individual to keep a healthy mouth and thus maintain their general health and well-being. A healthy mouth and a healthy body go hand in hand. Maintaining a healthy mouth is crucial to keeping it functioning correctly and for maintaining overall health and quality of life.

The 2018 campaign sub-theme ‘Think Mouth, Think Health’ introduces the link between oral health as being an indicator of general health and well-being. The campaign aims to educate people that keeping a healthy mouth is crucial to keeping it functioning correctly and for maintaining overall health and quality of life.

Your Responsibility

This day is an opportunity for dentists and dental professionals to put the spotlight on the immense burden caused by oral diseases and drive awareness among the general public, media and policymakers as well as call for integrated action.

It is also a day to educate people to practice good oral hygiene habits and manage their risk factors, including adopting a healthy diet (one that is low in sugar), avoiding tobacco use and betel nut consumption – all actions that will not only benefit oral health but help maintain general health and well-being.
