KARACHI: The Department of Oral Biology, Bahria University of Medical and Dental College, recently organised the tooth carving competition among the first-year students.

Dr Beenish Fatima Alam, Head of Oral Biology Department, supervised the event. Prof. Dr Shama Asghar, Head of Operative Dentistry Department, BUMDC and Prof Dr Saman Hakeem, Head of Orthodontics Department, BUMDC, judged the competition. Meanwhile, Dr Wahab Bakhsh Kadri, Principal Dental Section, BUMDC, and other faculty graced the event with their presence.

Dr Beenish instigated the idea of a carving competition among the students. Contrary to the traditional tooth carving on wax blocks, she asked the students to carve different dental anomalies on soap bars.

The students were divided into ten groups, and different anomalies were assigned to each one. The students had to prepare two contrasting anomalies and give a brief presentation on them.

The group that made the “Enamel Pearls and Hypercementosis” model secured the first position. Runner-ups prepared the models of “Dilaceration and Flexion” and “Fusion and Gemination”.

In the end, certificates of appreciation were presented to the judges. Everyone highly appreciated the event.
