FJDC participates in Dental Career Counselling: Talk by Dr Sameer Qureshi

KARACHI: Continuous education is very important, especially in the healthcare industry. With advancements evolving day by day, the value of pursuing post-graduate education is important not just for oneself, but also for the well-being of the patient as it can lead to the implementation of new techniques to improve the quality of treatment.

Keeping this in mind, the ANNUAL PGME PRE-CONFERENCE COUNSELLING SESSION was organised recently under the supervision of Dr Murtaza Raza Kazmi Assistant Professor & Head, Department of Surgery, AKUH. There were various speakers including Associate Professor Dr Sameer Qureshi (HOD Prosthodontics-FJDC) who briefly described their journey from undergraduates to postgraduate professionals.

The agenda behind this session was to guide and carve a pathway for young dentists especially fresh graduates who find it difficult to handpick their future post-graduation and specialisation. The discussion revolved around the gold standard of Fellowship from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan and the Master in Dental Surgery available at different universities across the country. The attendees were motivated to explore other nonclinical options being offered currently. They were also updated on the nonacademic modalities like private practice and research facilities available. Since dentistry is evolving day by day we have to look into modern methods of learning and catching up, hence the importance of research cannot be overshadowed. It was also suggested that a basic research article be published as early as during the house job so the students can get a hang of the business.

Career counseling can play a major role in a student’s study life. With regular guidance from professionals working in various fields, students are exposed to individuals from different backgrounds who can help them understand the pros and cons of each profession. This then leads to an informed decision on what someone may want to do after they graduate, rather than just following blind opportunities. It is also important to note that one should not limit themselves just by their degree, and there should be no hesitation in transitioning to other fields if someone is truly passionate about it.

The career counseling session was well attended by all the final-year students and fresh graduates and will go a long way in relieving students from the stress of what lies ahead.
