ISLAMABAD: The sad demise of distinguished senior maxillofacial surgeon Dr Ijaz Hussain Aqeel was widely mourned by the dental and medical community.
Dr Ijaz H Aqeel, who earned his BDS degree in 1956 from de'Montmorency College of Dentistry, Lahore, leaves behind a remarkable legacy in the field of oral maxillofacial surgery.
His exceptional contributions led to his appointment as a convener by the College of Physicians & Surgeons Pakistan.
Dr Aqeel played a pioneering role in establishing the dental section at the AFID Hospital.
He is credited with laying the foundation of the Dental Department at PIMS (Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences) and played a key role in its growth and sustainability. His dedication to overseeing clinical and academic programmes set a standard for excellence.
As a seasoned clinician and academic, Dr Ijaz was not only admired but revered as a father figure by many. He generously mentored numerous junior faculty and residents, earning immense respect from his peers and juniors alike.
Dr Aqeel holds the distinction of being the first Pakistani to obtain FDSRCS in England. He served as Principal at Baqai Dental College, headed the dental section at Fauji Foundation Dental Hospital in Rawalpindi, and contributed to Margalla Institute of Health Sciences (MIHS), Rawalpindi. In all his roles, he displayed a unique blend of humour, gentleness, and profound respect for everyone he encountered.
His memory will forever be cherished, and his absence deeply felt.
Dr. Arshad Malik spoke of Dr Aqeel's enduring impact, stating, "Dr Aqeel was my MCPS examiner and continued to be a friend and guide to his students and colleagues. He was always ready to lend a listening ear and offer sound advice and guidance to all who crossed his path."
