COVID-19 Takes Life Of Another Pregnant Lady

KARACHl: Dr Samra Ali, a senior gynaecologist at the Wah International Hospital, Taxila, died of COVID-19 recently.

Earlier, Flight Lieutenant Dr Mahnoor Farzand breathed her last at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH), Malir Cantonment, where she remained under treatment for Covid-19 for a week.

According to the Pakistan Medical Association (PMA), both lady doctors were pregnant and not vaccinated against COVID-19.

A Dow Medical College graduate, Dr Samra did her FCPS (Fellowship of the College of Physicians and Surgeons) in gynaecology from Aga Khan University in 2012. She left behind two sons and a daughter.

Dr Qaiser Sajjad of PMA said that there had been an urgent need to create awareness and educate women that COVID vaccines are safe for pregnant women and nursing mothers.

According to the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), pregnant people are at an increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19 compared with non-pregnant people. They have also been at risk of pre-term birth.

Severe illness requires hospitalisation, intensive care, a ventilator or special equipment to breathe. It might results in death too.

The CDC recommends COVID-19 vaccination for people aged 12 years and older, including pregnant people, breastfeeding, trying to get pregnant now or in the near future.
